The game of Futsal and its benefits
The only Fifa-Sanctioned indoor soccer game in the world is Futsal. It is played 5 v 5 with four field players and a goalie. The name derives from the Portuguese phrase 'Futebol de Salao' which translates into indoor soccer.
Futsal has a very strong influence in soccer for many players, especially Brazilians. They grow up playing it and the skills they obtain through it directly translates to their outdoor game. In fact, Futsal is one of the finest teachers of soccer. In the game of Futsal, players develop ball controll, pin-point passing and quick decision-making skills.
The ball is a size 3 or 4 ball and is 30% heavier than a regular soccer ball. The density of the ball requires the player to speed up their foot skills and overall ball-control. With this, the soccer player will improve on shooting, passing, trapping and the 1 v 1 scenario.
The game is played on a much smaller field within touchlines. This not only encourages quick touches but also forces each player to position themselves quickly and anticipate the path. The fast demand of the game will encourage the players creativity and ability to visualize the game of soccer.
"In the school sand colleges everybody in Brazil starts with Futsal and then they move to normal football... Of course Futsal was important in helping my ball control, quick thinking, passing... of course you have to have an aptitude for both Futsal and normal fottbal and you must have the capacity to adjust because of the differences in the games, but for dribbling, balance, concentration.. Futsal was very, very important, no doubt"
-- PELE
"I started playing Futsal when I was four years old and most of the moves I use on the pitch come from playing Futsal. Playing Futsal as a young child really helps to develop ball skills"
-- ROBINHO
